Multiple-Hit Ceramic Armor Design

"Multi-hit capable" means that some ceramic armor is designed to resist more than one projectile.  There are certain considerations when designing multi-hit plates.

The mosaic armor design is made from multiple, 2" pieces of high quality, ballistic ceramic tile.  These individual pieces are adhered together with strong adhesives and act as autonomous mini-armor systems.

Strong crack arresting materials (especially when used with mosaic armor systems) hold the individual tile together so that the peripheral damage to other tile is minimized.  This maximizes the ability for the mosaic ceramic strike face to resist other incoming projectiles.

The used of flexible bed materials within the horizontal material layering helps channel ballistic energy and permit the independent movement of mosaic ceramic pieces.  This also helps to maximize multi-hit capability.

Monolithic (one-piece ceramic) is not as effective in resisting multiple projectile strikes.  However, proper design can aid in mitigating this vulnerability.
