What is ARMORFILM™?
ARMORFILM™ is GTS's proprietary ballistic adhesive system developed specifically for ceramic armor plate construction. Unlike generic adhesives, ARMORFILM™ is engineered to meet the unique demands of ballistic applications where bond strength, consistency, and performance under extreme stress are critical. Every component of ARMORFILM™, from raw materials to final production, is sourced and manufactured in the United States under an ISO 9001:2008 quality program.
All GTS armor plates (except the OA+ series) are built with ARMORFILM™. The test results available under the testing section of our website demonstrate ARMORFILM™ efficacy in real-world ballistic scenarios. The adhesive plays a crucial role in ceramic armor performance by bonding the ceramic strike face to the UHMWPE backing plate, securing crack arresting layers, and managing energy transfer during ballistic impacts.
Advantages of GTS ARMORFILM™:
- Lower activation temperatures - Helps protect Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene molecular chains from heat damage
- Versatile bonding methods - Suitable for oven-based, autoclave bonding, or hydraulic pressing with heated molds
- NIJ drop testing compatible - Permits hard strike face surface protective materials (not just foam) during testing
- Excellent bond strength - Provides strong bonds between many dissimilar materials
- Tested compatibility - Works with many types of ballistic polyethylene
- Clean manufacturing - Made in the USA with low volatile organic compounds and no off-gassing
- Multi-application use - Can be used in hydraulic pressing between sections of different PE materials
Applications & Technical Information:
ARMORFILM™ is used by armor manufacturers, researchers, and advanced DIY armor builders who want to enhance their ceramic armor systems. The adhesive can be used for bonding ceramic tiles in mosaic configurations, attaching ceramic strike faces to backing plates, securing crack arresting layers, and repairing or upgrading existing armor plates.
The heat-activated application process allows for precise control over bonding. The adhesive remains stable until heat is applied through oven, autoclave, or heated mold processes, at which point it activates and creates a strong bond as it cools. This controlled activation ensures consistent results and allows for proper positioning of components before final bonding occurs.
