The Model 9490 represents proven ceramic armor technology in its most effective configuration. The mosaic ceramic design uses an array of individual 99%+ pure alumina ceramic tiles rather than a single monolithic piece. This approach provides significant advantages in multi-hit scenarios - when a projectile impacts the plate, the damage is contained within the affected tile and immediately surrounding area, while the rest of the plate maintains its full protective capability.

This plate meets NIJ 0101.07 and NIJ 0123.00 RF3 standards, providing protection against .30-06 M2 AP armor-piercing ammunition traveling at 2880 feet per second. The RF3 protection level also covers all lower-tier threats including M193, M855, M855A1, 7.62 x 51mm M80, and 7.62 x 39mm MSC. Multi-hit capability has been validated through extensive testing at NIJ-approved laboratories, demonstrating consistent performance across multiple impact scenarios.

The plate construction includes crack arresting layers made from aramid and carbon fiber materials. These layers help control ceramic fragmentation during impacts, reducing ceramic dust and maintaining structural integrity. The UHMWPE backing plate provides additional strength and helps manage backface deformation to protect against blunt force trauma.
